Ray Stauffer at the 2010 ADGA National Show

I am firmly opposed to any increase in the Nigerian Dwarf breed standard height, either for bucks or does.

My Name Is Ray Stauffer. Welcome to Elmwood Acres, the home of Elmwood Nigerian Dwarf, Alpine and Saanen Dairy Goats. Elmwood Acres is Located in the Arkansas River valley of South East Colorado.

Elmwood Acres started on July 4th 2003 when I purchased my first goat, an American Alpine named Mamm-Key Mango's Tangie. I joined a 4-H club later that year that focused on Dairy Goats in order to learn more about these wonderful animals. The first time I attended the county fair I caught the “show bug” and I fear I may never recover! I attended my first ADGA sanctioned show in 2005 when I participated in the Colorado State Fair. I had a wonderful time and was warmly welcomed by all the breeders there. Thus began my showing journey.

In 2008 I participated in LA for the first time. At that session the appraiser took time to walk me through the process, and used Tangie to show me how all the scores were determined. Imagine my surprise when he announced that her final score was 92 EEEE, at nine years old! Later that day two of Tangie's daughters went 89 and 90. I was beyond happy that I would get scores this high at my very first appraisal!

My first goat was an Alpine and Alpines will always hold a special place in my heart. But when I saw Nigerians it was love at first sight. I contacted Debbie Gesick of Velvet-Acres and bought my first Nigerian Dwarf “Velvet-Acres Midnight Rose”. The rest as they say is history. The Nigerians have slowly become my breed of focus. Rose has since earned her CH designation and has become the foundation doe of my Nigerian herd. Rose is now in the pedigrees of 12 of my Nigerians.

I was thrilled to be able to participate in Nigerian Dwarf history when I attended the 2010 ADGA National Show in Louisville, KY. I just had to be a part of the inaugural Nigerian Dwarf show at the ADGA Nationals. I had a wonderful time and met breeders from all over the country. I spent many hours browsing the barns looking at all the beautiful Nigerians that I had only seen in pictures before. I did very well for my first National Show. Eight out of the ten goats I took made it into the top seven in their class! I had one 2nd , one 3rd, two 4ths, a 5th, a 6th and two 7th place goats! And were talking huge classes.

At the 2008 National Show I fell in love with Saanens. Ever since I have kept my eye open for an opportunity to bring these gentle giants into my herd. Last spring when I saw a Sneer daughter, Tres Amigo AL Smile, up for sale I just had to bring her home. A month later I brought des Ruhigestelle Sunbreak into the herd. These girls were carefully selected to become the foundation of the Elmwood Saanen herd. In September 2011 I bought Tres Amigo Victor's Snort to round out my Saanen breeding program. I am hopeful for what the future holds!

All kids are removed at birth and raised on a strict CAE prevention program of heat treated colostrum and pasteurized milk. Kids receive CD&T shots at 4, 8 and 12 weeks old.

On December 29th 2010 I lost my special friend Tangie. She was my very first goat and I will miss her dearly. As her memorial I have written a Story about her many years with me.

I am a proud member of The "Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund"
